Apulian Planter, Blue
Apulian Planter, Blue
Description
Puglia, Italy - the region the Italians call the "heel of the boot" - is one of the wildest, most magical places I have ever visited. And not only is the landscape otherworldly, the craftsmanship of this region nestled between the Adriatic and Ionian seas is like nothing else. Known for its schizzato - colorful splatterware that has recently become popular across the Atlantic, there are also many other styles of pottery that are unique to each artist's atelier. There is a whole town devoted to the production of ceramiche; Grottaglie boasts nearly 100 bottega all with wildly different wares.
These planters were modeled after a vintage version I found in an antique shop in Ostuni and are typical of the region's glazes and shapes. These take inspiration from the artichoke, a shape that turns up in a lot of Puglian pottery.
