Description

The first time I visited the Portobello Road – London’s very own delightful version of the Marché aux Puces – I was immediately drawn to the sparkling iridescent colors of lusterware, with its silvers and white, golds and roses, coppers and blues. Just a little research reveals that what I’ve always considered a very English form of pottery (popularized especially during the Arts & Crafts movement of the 19th century), in fact originated in 9th century Mesopotamia. Lusterware is created through two firings of the vessel, using oxidized glazes: the first to apply color, the second to achieve the luster. I recently found a beautiful lot of pitchers and creamers at an estate sale. They are as beautiful as they are varied.

This pitcher measures 4 inches tall
